According to Maximus the Confessor, man is a microcosm that contains all the elements of creation, given the role of mediating between all creations and God, provided that man was assigned the mission to continually ascend until he unites all creations with God through his intellectual capacity. However, man can no longer fulfil this mission because he has chosen the material pleasures represented by self-love rather than making choices based on the logoi. Maximus the Confessor states that it is at this very moment that God adds pain to the pleasure, and this is why man is trapped in a vicious cycle in which he is constantly inflicted with endless pain, as he seeks other instances of pleasure in order to escape the pain from the pleasure he sought previously. In other words, in the initial choice between what is eternal and what is not, man chose “self-love (φιλαυτία)", which is not eternal and signifies “material pleasures (ἡδονή)", and God added “pain (ὀδύνη)” to accompany the material pleasures without fail. Therefore, man ceased being the mediator who mediates between the world and God through his superior intellectual capacity, and instead became a being that groans painfully due to the consequences of sin, while constantly being cyclically trapped between “material pleasures (ἡδονή)” and “pain (ὀδύνη)”.
