 21세기 들어 인류는 ‘과학 기술의 진보’와 ‘기후 환경의 공격’이 팽팽히 맞서는 불편한 상황을 종종 마주했다. 

작금의 코로나19로 인한 팬데믹은 최근 인류가 맞이한 가장 큰 재앙이다. 

공포영화에나 나올법한 전염병의 강세는 늘어가는 감염자의 숫자뿐 아니라, 생존을 위한 사회 전반의 대처와 정신적 불안과 우울감을 확산시켰다. 

인류가 시작되고 농경으로 인한 1차 혁명을 맞이하기까지 인간은 자연의 일부였다. 농경을 시작하며 정착은 곧 문명 형성으로 이어졌고 자연의 일부였던 인류는 자연을 이용하기 시작해 오늘날 4차산업혁명까지 생태계 교란과 환경 파괴에 이르게 했다. 

누적된 지구 동식물의 피로도와 지질층의 자정력 저하는 지구 생명체 모두에게 위험한 상황이다. 

지구의 지속적인 위기의 신호에도 불구하고 인류는 인간 중심의 개발과 이용을 가속했던 것도 사실이다. 

1995년 노벨 화학상을 받은 파울 크뤼첸(Paul J. Crutzen)이 주장했던 ‘인류세(Anthropocene Epoch)’는 이같은 인간 중심의 인류의 시간에 대한 증거를 보게 한다. 지금은 지질시대 중 홀로세(Holocene Epoch)가 아니라 인류세라는 주장은 지질층에 쌓인 산업혁명 이후 지구촌 사람들이 먹었던 무수한 닭뼈들과 플라스틱에 의해 거부할 수 없는 진실을 마주하게 한다. 적어도 대기중 오염과 기후변화가 자연계 자체의 변덕이 아니라 인류 전체의 삶과 욕망의 결과임을 인정해야 할 때이다.

The rise of infectious diseases, as though stepping right out of a horror movie, have spread to countless people and affected the overall societal response to be one of survival, mental anxiety, and depression. Humans were merely part of nature prior to the first agricultural revolution.

With the advent of agriculture, humankind settled areas and formed civilizations, and soon began taking advantage of nature, ultimately leading to the

ecological disruption and environmental destruction that have preceded the fourth industrial revolution today.

The accumulative fatigue of the Earth's animals and plants and the reduced self-purification of the geological strata are dangerous threats to all life on Earth.

Humans have accelerated onward with reckless development and utilization, despite the continuous signs of ’Earth’s state of crisis. 

Paul J. Crutzen, winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1995, called for an "Anthropocene Epoch", which testifies to this self-centered history of humankind.

In terms of geological history, the present time is no longer the Holocene Epoch, but rather the Anthropocene Epoch, and this claim is substantiated by the innumerous chicken bones and plastic products present in the geological layer that have been consumed by humankind since the industrial revolution. 

We should at the very least admit that air pollution and climatic change are the result of the lifestyles and lusts of humankind, not simply random, happenstance changes brought about by the whims of Mother Nature.
