하드웨어 기반의 PUF 반도체 칩은 인간의 홍채나 지문처럼 고유의 물리적 코드를 갖고 있다. 제조 공정에서 생성되는 미세구조의 편차를 키 값으로 갖기 때문에 PUF로 생성 되는 보안 키는 랜덤하게 생성되어 고유성을 지니기 때문에 복제가 불가능하다. 하지만 더 높은 수준의 안전성을 위해 키가 생성되는 조합의 수를 늘리려면 하드웨어의 구조도 바꿔야 하는 한계가 노출됐다.

새로 개발된 광트랜지스터의 주요 소재는 근적외석 흡광 및 전하수송 특성이 우수한 유기광트랜지스터에 콜레스테릭 액정을 결합한 것이다. 콜레스테릭 액정 필름은 빛의 회전 방향에 따라 소자에 도달하는 빛이 양이 조절되기 때문에 근적외선을 선택적으로 반사시키는 특성이 강하다. 이렇게 결합된 단일 통합소자는 실험에서 고감도의 원편광 감응도와 함께 광전류에 대해서도 우수한 비대칭 계수를 나타냈다. 

연구진은 이를 토대로 간단한 용액공정을 이용해 어레이의 물리적 크기를 바꾸지 않고도 암호화 키 생성에 사용되는 조합의 수를 증가시켜 해킹과 도감청 등을 원천 차단할 수 있는 PUF 소자를 제작하는 데 성공했다.

Regarding hardware-based PUF semiconductor chips, for example, each one possesses a unique physical code, similar to a human’s irises and fingerprints. Because the deviations in the microstructures generated during the manufacturing process act as a key value, the security keys generated via PUFs are random and unique, making them impossible to duplicate. However, there were limitations in that the hardware structure needed to be changed in order to increase the number of key combinations to enhance security.

The primary material used in the newly-developed photoresistor is a combination of cholesteric liquid crystals and an organic phototransistor with excellent, near-infrared light absorption and charge transporting properties. The cholesteric liquid crystal film features a strong tendency to selectively reflect near-infrared rays, as the amount of light reaching the device is controlled according to the rotational direction of the light. In the study, the two-in-one device exhibited excellent asymmetry coefficients for photocurrent with high sensitivity in detecting circular, polarized light. 

The research team succeeded in fabricating a PUF device that could serve as a fundamental solution against hacking, wiretapping, etc. by increasing the number of combinations in generating encryption keys using a simple solution process, without changing the physical size of the array.
